Some People Just Don’t “Get” Real Estate 2.0

I won’t pretend to know everything. But what I just saw right now made me laugh/squirm/say “WTF are you thinking?”. And I just had to write and rant.
For anyone who knows me, knows I’m not a big believer of print advertising in the real estate world. When over 80% of potential buyers get their information from the Internet, why on earth would any realtor in their right mind advertise in a newspaper? Just MY opinion, mind you, but I think you might as well hold a $100 bill over the toilet and set it on fire. That’d probably have the same effect and get you the same amount of leads.
So in the hardcopy edition of today’s San Mateo Daily Post, in the real estate “section” — I use that term loosely, as the section is merely comprised of an overabundance of ads with all the same buzzwords and ego-filled self-assessments — I see an ad for a realtor with the headline “Real Estate Broker 2.0″.
Now, I don’t mean to pick on anyone, nor is this a personal dig, and I certainly won’t name names, but I looked at this person’s website. In terms of web 2.0 “stuff”, there was absolutely ZERO on this guy’s website. No Facebook fan page link, no Twitter feed, not even a LinkedIn link. No blog, no RSS feed, nada, nothing. Come on, dude, you live in Silicon Valley — make us proud by at least having a Facebook link!
Again, I don’t pretend to know everything, but geez….no matter what industry you’re in, if you claim to be part of “the next big thing”, or technologically prescient, don’t have your website be a relic from 2003. Especially if you live in Silicon Valley.
And yes, if you look at my website, www.edgory.com, I do have Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn links, feeds for my 3 blogs and my podcasts. Call me silly, but that might be a little more 2.0 than your typical realtorsaurus that keeps food on the table for newspaper ad sales guys.
